TILL DEBT DO WE PART

Everybody’s Uncle,

If my son contracts debts, and I pay off one of his debts, does that make me responsible of all of his debts?
I live in California.

Thank you,

Matt D.

Matt,

That fact that you elected to pay your son’s debt does not, in my opinion, automatically make you responsible for his other debts.

However, if you are legally attached in some way to the debt (cosigner, co- renter, partner, etc.) you would be responsible in accordance with that encumbrance.

As long as you are not in any way attached to your son’s debt, it is his problem, not yours.
