MILITARY CAREER VS PARENTS
Hello "uncle",
lol....I have a serious question for you. Is emancipation the only way out of my parent's house before I turn 18? See, I turn 17 this December and I really need to get out of this house. I'm already out of school (got my diploma) and I'm a really hard worker at whatever job I'm given to do. I decided what I want to do with my life (join the military) but my parents won't let me choose my own career. I really hope you can give me the answer that I'm looking for. I'll be happy with all the help you can give me.
Thanks, Brooklyn
Hi there Brooklyn!
First and foremost I applaud your military ambitions.
That said, let’s get down to business.
Short answer, yes, the choices are emancipation or runaway. Read my other columns about conditions for emancipation. Physical or emotional abuse or neglect are cases for; parental refusal to allow enlistment – not likely.
There are many cases of people enlisting younger than 18. Visit the website of the Branch of choice and make an appointment to speak to a Recruiting Specialist about your situation. If there is a way – they will tell you (that’s their job).
Don’t be mad at your parents for their stand against enlistment. It is a great choice but the challenges and risks have to be weighed. It is a life changing decision. Such decisions have to be made after careful mature calculation, not impulsive youthful fantasy.
Don’t make the next year of your life miserable for yourself and your parents. If your military ambition is real, remaining dedicated for a year with poise will show some “military” self-discipline.
Working with your parents is probably easier than basic training. Make your appearance and demeanor “military.” Work two jobs. Regard your parents as Officers – “yes sir” – that type of thing.
Military training will impress upon you the importance of gathering intelligence before taking action. If there is no immediate route to enlistment start pre-basic at home. Get yourself in the best physical condition possible. Practice some military discipline by accepting the lawful rules of your house. It is a fair bet they are easier than military discipline.
