LOSE WEIGHT GAIN BRAIN Everybody’s Uncle, Hiya! I am only 13 but I would really like to lose weight. I have recently got a gym membership for my local gym, but I will only be going about 3 times a week. Are there any exercise routines you could advise me to do in my spare time during the week? I tell my friends at school I am unhappy with my weight, but they tell me I look fine and should not worry about it. However this does not make any difference. We have games lessons twice a week, and I am really self-conscious about what I look like in shorts! I would love to be confident in what I look like for a change, and would like to start losing weight soon. Please help! [Unsigned] - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Dear Unsigned, “Only 13.” You write much better than many of the older kids and adults that ask questions. That tells Uncle Jimmy that you are smart; smart enough to listen closely. First, make sure that your desire to lose weight is reasonable. Some kids get carried away and do themselves harm. Not you, right? Listen to your friends with one ear but use two ears for parents and professionals. It is great to be self-motivated at “only 13,” but it is even better to understand the value of guidance by, a parent, coach, trainer or medical professional to help you maximize results without causing harm during this very important growth period of your life. There are 2 key factors in weight loss - calories in / calories out. In other words, a nutritious diet with an eye on fats and sweets, plus well-planned exercise and activities that build a better body. (Adding muscle should be tuned to the athletics of your choice. Special balanced routines to attain goals require a pro.) Three days a week in a gym, plus a calorie-sensitive diet should help you lose weight. But there is another benefit to be gained from a healthful weight control program - MENTAL DISCIPLINE! “What’s that Uncle Jimmy,” you ask at “only 13.” Training your mind to remind the body to exercise and eat right also helps to develop “brain muscle.” “Brain muscle,” with focus and discipline, is the difference between survival and success. Put this thought in your head. Wouldn’t it be great to have the body of my dreams and become the kid of my parent’s dreams at the same time? Here is a suggestion for my very smart 13-year old. Every activity burns off calories. Making your bed, picking up your clothes, doing the dishes, walking the dog, carrying laundry, running errands, and putting out the garbage. Surfing the TV and Internet don’t do much. A brisk walk with a friend (parents are your best friends) sounds good to Uncle Jimmy. If you were to discipline yourself as suggested, you would look good in shorts, your parents would be in parental heaven, your grades would max out, your teachers would be thrilled, you will become teacher to your friends, your goals will be achieved and the world will notice. Go ahead, make YOUR day, Everybody’s Uncle |
