CAN’T SELL WHAT YOU DON’T OWN
Do you know if it is possible, or maybe I should say legal, to sell a car that is not licensed or insured? I have non working vehicle that someone is interested in buying but I am not sure about these conditions. I live in Indiana and I have tried to find an answer on the internet but have come up empty. Thank you for any help or advise,

Valerie,
Cars are “titled” (certificate of ownership). Motor Vehicles keep track of ownership by recording transfers of “title” as the vehicle passes from seller to buyer.
Check with your local Motor Vehicle Department about insurance on vehicles that are not in service. Required or not, it is wise to insure against damage that relates to stored vehicles (fire or transport).
Ordinarily, you cannot sell a vehicle unless you can prove that you own it. Assuming that the vehicle did not materialize out of thin air, it had to be acquired from someone. If that person had “title” to the vehicle and never transferred it to you, HE might be the OWNER according to MV records, in which case the “title” must be transferred to you FIRST. All vehicles have Vehicle Identification Numbers (check driver side of dashboard and information on door panel). MV can search for ownership by VIN number. If the car is stolen, you might have some explaining to do.
