A WAIST IS A TERRIBLE THING TO MIND Niece, You are never too young to be concerned about your weight, health, and appearance. Never to too young to decide what is reasonable and what can be harmful. Learning about anything requires gathering information and taking the best possible course of action to achieve your goal. You took some time to explain that you are neither fat nor skinny but just want to look your best. Maybe when your family tells you that you gained some weight they are paying you a compliment. Have you heard about all those super skinny runway models that are ruining their health to remain ridiculously skinny? Let’s be reasonable. First, do some research and find out what the ideal weight is for your height, body type and age. Look at your family for an indication of how your body will form as you get older. Talk to mom about the physical changes that occur as you mature. Nature plays funny tricks on us. Some puffiness and pimples are usually just part of the growing process. Get mom on your side. She can help with diet and activities. DO NOT – use any diet pills unless ordered by your doctor. About looking good: The simple formula for weight loss is “calories in – calories out.” Minimizing junk food like; chips, pretzels, fries, drinks and snacks loaded with sugar and fats, is good for our health and great for weight loss. Regular exercise (unless there are medical limits) burns off calories and tones our muscles. There are books that tell you about fat and calorie content of various foods. You will be amazed at where calories are hiding out. “Knowledge is power,” read up! Focus and moderation: A long term plan works best. Sensible diet and exercise works better in the long run than “crash” programs. Make a chart of your weight and measurements. Losing a half pound per week and toning up your muscles will make a big difference by the time summer comes. Additionally, you will feel good about yourself for establishing valuable self-discipline that will serve you well for the rest of your life. There is always the temptation to “work out with a friend.” Most people do not have the discipline to stay on a diet and exercise plan. If you have a friend or several that want to work together – great, but conditioning is very personal. YOU set the standards and if they want to join in – fine, but it is your project and over the long term it is best to go it alone. I give you high praise for seeking information before acting. Good for you! Everybody’s Uncle |
